MINT Multimedia Arts students attended a four-part online seminar series about paper-making and its versatility as an art medium. The webinars, called “Paper Trail", happened from February 21, 2022, then on March 2, 9, and 16, 2022. These talks were for Materials Class, taught by instructor Dulzzi Gutierrez, and led by Program Head, Lizza Gutierrez. The speakers include representatives from Fedrigoni Papers, the main collaborator of this event; design studio, Blue Capuch Design; graphic supply, HansMcKernel; printing service company, Design Plus; and a children’s book illustrator and artist.

The first talk last February 21 was called Paper Basics. It was focused on the history and techniques of paper-making, led by Fedrigoni Papers Marketing Manager for Asia-Pacific, Kervin Valero. He talked briefly about the history of paper, then of Fedrigoni’s growth as a staple brand for manufacturing quality paper products.

In his talk, he discussed about the factors to make a good paper product. He also mentioned the brief history of modern paper-making, which originated from China, and how it reached Italy to be perfected. He also spoke about the development of the Italian paper-making techniques, and then elaborated on how paper is a good material to use to practice design skills, as it is both versatile and sustainable. He also explained the step-by-step process of how the brand creates their various paper products.

The next speaker is Liza Flores, a children’s book illustrator and paper crafter from Studio Dialogo. In her session named Paper Stories’, she talked about her craft of paper cutouts to create colorful and interesting sceneries for various children’s book titles. She explained her process on how to do the paper collages which would then either adorn the covers or be the illustrations accompanying the manuscripts. She said that paper is an interesting material to work with because she can “play around with the shadows” as she does the layers for her projects. She also holds exhibits for her works and is part of INK or “Illustrador Ng Kabataan”. Besides that, her paper cutouts have also been a part of the set designs for theater stages.

The following session called Endless Paper Possibilities, had Fedrigoni’s Kervin Valero talking about paper finishing process; and Blue Capuch Studio team of Cyd Recindoro and Fei Ruanto and HansMcKernel’s Rico Delos Santos on design trends for paper crafting like paper creasing.
Lastly, on March 16, 2022 , Dennis Merano of Design Plus Print Solutions close the Paper Trail webinars with his session, “Got Paper? Let’s Print On It!”. He talked about the process of digital printing and introduce their main hardware, the HP Indigo 7600 for their IndiGold printing, which can do customized prints on paper without manually altering the variables.

The last online seminar also had a demonstration by Merano, as he explained the digital printing process step-by-step. The webinar will teach students the ins and outs of digital printing—like hardware know-how, correct color adjustments, and knowing the correct paper to use for any project.

By the end of the program, the students also received their ‘Paper Trail’ kits, which include a huge sheet with four printed collaterals, printed by Design Plus on carefully chosen paper sponsored by Fedrigoni Papers. Each kit includes a certificate of attendance bearing the name of every student attendee, a personalized Paper Trail note card, a Paper Trail postcard, and a mini artwork. All collaterals are meticulously designed by MINT students.

Design Plus also offered a 50% discount on their printing services exclusively for MINT Multimedia students who attend the said seminar. They can use the one-time voucher until April 22, 2022, 5 PM. The paper and post press services will not be included.

‘Paper Trail’ also declared a competition segment, the Paper Tunnel, which will have students create their paper dioramas. Deadline of submissions will be on April 25, 2022. An exhibit of their works and awarding of winners will follow.

The ‘Paper Trail’ webinar series covered different topics such as paper-making, paper crafting, design trends and paper finishing, and digital printing. This is a collaborative effort with Fedrigoni Papers; along with design studio, Blue Capuch Graphic Design; digital cutting machine supplier, HanseMckernel Graphic Supplies; and printing service company, Design Plus.
